Nearly 2 million American adults each year are diagnosed with cancer. If you receive a diagnosis, your schedule can quickly start to fill up with doctor's appointments, medical procedures and pharmacy visits. Creating a checklist of things to do can help keep you busy and feeling more in control. But acknowledging the effects a cancer diagnosis can have on your emotions — and healthily managing those emotions — is almost as important.

Doctors and psychologists now recognize that healing improves after a diagnosis when both our physical and emotional needs are met, says Niki Barr, Ph.D., a psychotherapist at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Texas, who consults with medical doctors, extended families and caregivers about emotionally coping with a cancer diagnosis.

Learning you have cancer is a stressful experience, and it's important to acknowledge and cope with that stress. Fully understanding how your emotional needs can change after you receive a cancer diagnosis can go a long way in helping you and your family heal. The tips here can help you support your mental health as you navigate your diagnosis and treatment.

Upon hearing your diagnosis, you might experience grief, fear or even a feeling of denial until some time has passed. "These are all normal and emotionally healthy responses, but it's all too easy to spiral out of control with fear in the beginning," says Barr. Fortunately, these tips can help you manage the anxiety and fear that come along with learning about a cancer diagnosis.

Lessen the Impact of Anxious Thoughts

Start by writing your thoughts down on note cards or in a journal. Identify the first one that's leading you to feel uneasy. For example, you might write down something like "I'm afraid of my hair falling out." Then, move onto the subsequent fear and write it down. That might be something like "People will treat me differently if they see I have cancer."

When you've identified most of your anxious thoughts, go back to the first one and write something new on the card that can help ease your stress. It should be a thought that's confident and empowering. For example, suppose you're worried about your hair falling out. In that case, a positive view could be: "I've been looking forward to getting a new hairstyle anyway." When you're feeling nervous, read the more positive strategies, says Barr.

Work On Your Internal Dialogue

It can also help to defuse all those "What if?" questions you might ask yourself, such as "What if my cancer has spread?" or "What if the treatment doesn't work?" One scary question tends to lead to another and often turns into full-fledged anxiety. Try to focus on those things you have the power to improve on your own. The next time you start asking yourself the what-ifs, substitute the upsetting ideas with this one: "Is this thought helping me or hurting me?" You can also ask, "Is this thought moving me forward or backward?" Your answers might surprise you, and they can help you move away from the thoughts that are holding you back.

Get Grounded

Interrupting periods of anxiety by focusing on small details around you can help you shift your perspective away from negativity and towards the present moment. "Look at the beautiful color of the walls in the room you're in; look at the person you're talking to, the clothes [they're] wearing," Barr suggests. Becoming very present and focused on physical details nearby helps soothe sudden anxious thoughts. Turn your focus towards absorbing the colors, smells, people and each new sound around you. Build those sensations up very clearly in your mind. You can use this technique as a distraction tool the next time you're waiting for a medical procedure or want a diversion from your thoughts.

Meditate to Music

Research shows that 15 to 30 minutes of both guided imagery and soothing tunes can alleviate deep feelings of stress about a cancer diagnosis. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) reviewed 30 clinical cancer trials that analyzed more than 1,890 cancer patients. They found that music therapy can have a beneficial effect on anxiety, pain, mood, quality of life, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure.

The CTCA also offers many classes and therapies to help people relax, reduce stress and improve their quality of life as part of an extensive mind-body medicine program. Many centers provide calming background music during healing therapies.

What Are Your Next Steps?

You have a cancer diagnosis: Now what? Learning how to clear your mind and focus on positive thoughts is a helpful step in the right direction. Here are other soul-soothing strategies you can try.

Start Journaling and Reflecting

Research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology has shown that expressing your innermost feelings can reduce stress and have a range of other emotional and social benefits. Researchers aren't sure why putting thoughts down on paper is effective. Still, it allows you to process complex emotions and help you chart a way forward, whether you've been diagnosed with cancer or are taking care of someone who has.

Exercise When Possible

Exercising for 2.5 hours per week can help you beat symptoms of depression and fatigue. Among the nation's millions of cancer survivors, there are hints — but not proof yet — that active exercisers may lower their risk of their cancer coming back.

The American College of Sports Medicine hosted a medical panel of cancer specialists to evaluate this exercise evidence. It issued guidelines suggesting that cancer patients and survivors should exercise for about 30 minutes most days of the week. This exercise should be enjoyable to you but also build up a sweat. When patients and their family caregivers exercised together, research found, everyone was more likely to stick with the fitness regimen, boost their physical stamina and experience less emotional strain.

Strengthen Your Social Support System

Connecting with others who've been through this kind of emotional diagnosis already can be a source of comfort and support. Learn more about online communities and your local chapters and support groups that meet up. The American Cancer Society also suggests attending one-on-one professional therapy or its "I Can Cope" online support groups to learn more.

Vitamin C Glucose Competition

Vitamin C Glucose Competition

Glucose competes with Vitamin C. Mismanaging this competition is detrimental to your health.

The Players

Glucose AKA Blood Sugar

Glucose is a main body fuel that provides cellular energy. It is essential to life. However, it is akin to the Goldilocks story. To little is no good. Too much contributes to vast chronic health conditions. We need to be just right.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water soluble (dissolves in liquid) nutrient. One interesting tidbit for us human is we can't make it internally. Unlike most other animals who can make their own, we must get our Vitamin C from dietary sources.

Its is an antioxidant itself and supports glutathione (the body's "master antioxidant") recycling 1. It also provides collagen/connective tissue support and helps with immune function. Not too shabby.

The Competition

Insulin promotes vitamin C uptake at the cellular level 2. Most know insulin as an escort for glucose into the cells. The problem lies when blood sugar rises. High blood sugar inhibits uptake of Vitamin C3 .

It is critical we get take care to keep our Vitamin C uptake ideal.

When Vitamin C Falls Behind

If we continue spiking blood sugar and tanking Vitamin C uptake, what happens?

Immune System

White Blood Cells (WBC) are a component of the immune system. One role they have is to undergo phagocytosis (engulf/swallow invaders) when pathogens present. This process also uses a high amount of oxidative stress to kill the pathogens. WBCs accumulate high concentrations of Vitamin C to protect themselves (Vitamin C, the antioxidant)4. Not surprisingly, dietary sugar consumption decreases the WBC's ability to undergo phagocytosis5. Sugar can make you sicker.

Skin & Connective Tissue

Vitamin C takes part in collagen synthesis. If we are suboptimal in Vitamin C are collagenous structures could be at risk. This risk is greater since most American's don't get enough dietary collagen. Eating muscle meats and avoiding connective tissues skirts consumption.

Skin is one tissue reliant on collagen. So, logically, Vitamin C is critical in skin health6. High blood sugar decreases Vitamin C, and therefore collagen status, but there is another consequence. Sugar binds to proteins in a process called glycation (the same process as brownie meat). High sugar, more glycation. This is what the diabetic lab value HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) tracks. Glycation degrades skin health, while Vitamin C is protective7.

Tendons have a high collagen composition. Here again, Vitamin C is important is important in their composition8. Might those high sugar sports drinks make it easier for an ACL injury? Potentially.

Cardiovascular

Our blood vessels also have a collagen component. The absence of sufficient Vitamin C impairs collagen formation in the vasculature, whereas Vitamin C can boost function9.

Linus Pauling, who was a staunch advocate of Vitamin C, made a connection between deficiency and Lp(a). Lp(a) is a lipoprotein, like LDL (AKA "bad cholesterol"). Lp(a) is a concern, partly because of its propensity to promote clotting. Pauling showed low Vitamin C increased Lp(a)10. And this makes sense with the paragraph above. If vessels are breaking down, they become leaky. Lp(a) then promotes clotting so our blood doesn't escape. I included this discussion in my detailed paper on cholesterol and statins.

We can tie this section right back to too much blood sugar. Doctors treat diabetes like a cardiovascular disease. Glucose degrades Vitamin C status. This lowered status causes leaky vasculature. The body responds by patching it with Lp(a) and clotting. Time to back off on the sweets?

Strategies

Let's look at a few ways to rescue Vitamin C from sugar

When To Eat

The most reliable way to avoid high blood sugar is fasting11. I spent over 20 pages detailing the importance of Why When To Eat Matters, please have a look for more details. In the meantime, expanding time between calories consumed will be helpful.

Avoid Sugar Spiking Foods

I also touch on this in the Why When To Eat Matterspaper. Sure, sugar will increase blood sugar. But, refined carbohydrates such as any flour product will raise your blood sugar more than regular sugar itself.  That bowl of pasta? Think of it as pure sugar in your blood stream.

Foods

Getting nutrients from food is always best. Many fruits and vegetables are high in Vitamin C. However, caution is required on fruits. Fruits in excess can drive up blood sugar – aim for 1-2 servings max per day. Fruit juices are in the never category.

Supplements

Supplementing is an option. As Pauling showed us, it is hard to get too much Vitamin C, especially at labeled doses. Studies show benefit, especially in people with high blood sugar12 13.

I prefer liposomal Vitamin C preparations. They encapsulate these in a fat layer, and this helps make them more bioavailable14.

Supplementing during a fast and during a meal that is higher on the sugar end both can be beneficial.

Take Away

While we don't worry about scurvy, less than ideal Vitamin C levels are a concerning situation. Understanding we make this so with blood sugar provoking foods provides us an avenue to take corrective action. These foods are Vitamin C blockers. We need to avoid these and restore Vitamin C to recover.

Melano Cc Essence Vitamin C

Melano Cc Essence Vitamin C

I'd been debating for a while whether to spill the beans on one of my favourite Vitamin C serums to date.

On the one hand, there are some things I'd like to keep to my self, hugging it to my chest with a sly smile, knowing it's my little secret. On the other hand, I'm a damn blogger, prone to sharing LOL!

So, I guess I'll tell you about the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence aka Melano CC Vitamin C Essence after all.

melano cc intensive anti-spot essence

Melano CC, from what I understand, is a Japanese brand under the Rohto-Mentholatum umbrella (the same one that houses Hada Labo). If I'm not mistaken, they only have one range, which focuses on the use of Vitamin C.

I remember someone telling me about it once, a few years ago. It wasn't until I came upon it in a pharmacy that I decided to pick one up to try. Yes, Melano CC is found in pharmacies (or drugstores) in Japan and in some other countries (but not yet Malaysia, unfortunately! So read on at your peril)Apparently, that's changed! 🙂

Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence – Vitamin C serum

I first came across the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence in Bangkok, at Watson's pharmacy. When I saw it, it triggered in my memory a comment by a reader, so I picked up a box to try. I included the box in the pictures here (which I don't usually do) because it is otherwise very difficult for a non-Japanese speaker to find this product.

Even in Bangkok, the whole box is just full of Japanese writing. Only the back has a sticker in Thai, which I can't read either! So let's just say that I've been flying blind since I bought it LOL! 😀 Thank goodness for the internet! 😛

It is however, very easy to spot this bright yellow box on the shelves, and if you're in Japan (where I bought my back up) it also boasts itself as a No. 1 bestseller item. You can't really go wrong picking up any of the Japanese No. 1 products 😛

Eye on the special nozzle dispenser

The actual product inside the box is a silver tube containing the essence. But here's something I like very much about the packaging of this product.

melano cc intensive anti-spot essence

The key ingredient used in the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence is Vitamin C in the L-Ascorbic Acid form. This, while being one of the most effective forms of Vitamin C, is also one of the least stable. It is the one that usually turns yellow when exposed to the air.

To counter this problem, instead of putting the product in a dropper bottle, as most Vitamin C serums do, Melano CC packages their essence in a tube, with a special nozzle.

This nozzle keeps the packaging air-tight, as product is only dispensed when you squeeze the tube. This way, air is kept out and the product remains fresh. I think it's genius and I can't imagine why no other brands are using the same packaging! 😀

DO NOT Cut the Melano CC essence nozzle

If you look at the paper insert (which is all in Japanese, and from what I can tell, quite informative, if you can read Japanese) they even advise you NOT to cut off the nozzle LOL!

I think it is because most people may not realize that this is the actual dispensing mechanism. For me, the essence remained as clear in the last drop as the day it was I first used it. Colour me impressed!

Let me just say that I thought that this Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence is a regular Vitamin C serum that you use all over. That has been how I have been using it.

It wasn't until much later, that I found out that it is in fact, an anti-spot treatment. So, it is meant to help "whiten or lighten" dark spots. I also learnt that you are supposed to only use it on the spots. Oops! I was using it all over LOL! 😀

Alongside lightening dark spots and acne scars and preventing melanin over-production, it also contains Vitamin E and Isopropyl Methyphenol and DipotassiumGlycyrrhizinate, which are supposed to be antiseptic and anti-inflammatory ingredients to help reduce redness.

Why do I like the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence?

melano cc intensive anti-spot essence

Because it is pretty effective and impressive considering the price! You know I have run the gamut of Vitamin C serums, and am always trying new ones. The last one I enjoyed using cost an arm and a leg! This one by comparison, is so much more affordable!

I use Vitamin C serums for a few purposes, none of which have anything to do with fading or removing my hyperpigmentation. That, unfortunately, is resistant to topical products so I no longer worry too much about it.

What I use Vitamin C products for, is to maintain clearer skin, prevent more dark spots from forming, and to strengthen my skin. I feel this does the job.

The Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence has a clear, slightly oily texture, with a slight citrus-type scent. Nothing very strong, and it isn't very oily.

I usually squeeze out about 2-3 drops in the palm of my hand, and apply to my skin, all over my face. If you like, you can use less and focus only where you need it. I prefer to just slather it all over, because I know my skin benefits from it.

One tube has lasted me about 2 months or so. For the first few weeks, I use it both day and night, after cleansing and a facial mist. If you use it day and night, the effects are a little more pronounced. In about a week, I noticed that my skin looked clearer. I had run out of Vitamin C serums so had not been using any prior to this. And I was impressed! I even tweeted it!

May have found one of the best Vitamin c serum yet. Fairly affordable and effective. Lovely texture. Just practically impossible to find locally. Lucky I have a back up and know where I can get more ?

— Paris B (@parisbmws) July 29, 2018

After that, I scaled back to just once a day, in the morning. The reason I use Vitamin C serums in the morning, is because Vitamin C is also an antioxidant, and your skin could do with some protection in the day when you are out and about. I have also read that it helps "boost" the efficacy of sunscreen, which is why I pair it this way.

melano cc intensive anti-spot essence

Once I scale it back to just once a day, I do notice that the effects aren't as spectacular. But this way, I maintain my skin clarity. It also allows me to use other products and ingredients in the evening routine, where I focus more on repair and hydration 🙂

Now and again, I go for a stretch of about a week, using Vitamin C serums day and night, and it always delivers results. Do note however, that I have been using Vitamin C serums for a while, so I cannot expect dramatic results. All I can hope for is maintenance. If you are new to it however, then you may notice more significant results.

I think the key reasons I like the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence so much, is because it is effective enough for me, it remains clear right to the last drop thanks to the impressive packaging, and it is, above all, affordably priced.

Melano CC in Malaysia

A little while after I published this post, I was informed by readers that Melano CC is now available in Malaysia, at Watson's pharmacy, and has been since November 2018 by now.

Price-wise, I think it is very affordable locally, and as pharmacy products do, often go on sale. This is a product I am very happy to use, affordable, and now, easily available. Yes, I will repurchase and I will continue using this as long as it works for me. I will wander away of course. It's what skincare junkies like me do. But I'll be back! 🙂

IN A NUTSHELL

The Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence or Melano CC Vitamin C Essence is a Vitamin C based essence (serum) targeted at reducing and fading dark spots. Depending on the type of dark spots you are targeting, it may or may not be very effective. It will likely be more effective on dark spots and redness caused by acne or inflamed skin, or perhaps freckles. But if it is something more severe or linked to hormones or hereditary issues then it will likely not do much. That said however, I personally find it effective for keeping my skin texture clear (where I do not have pigmentation), and if I use it day and night, my skin looks brighter overall (not whiter – note the difference). I like the slightly oily texture which absorbs easily, and I love the packaging which keeps the product fresh to the last drop. This is very important as Vitamin C is prone to oxidise and when it does, it's useless. You can use just 1-2 drops on your problem areas, or like me, use 2-3 drops all over my face. One tube lasted me about 3 months. I'm hoarding my back up 😛

HOW TO USE: Cleanse -> Mist -> Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence either on affected areas or all over (treat it as a serum) -> Moisturiser

PROS: Packaging keeps the product fresh to the last drop, Texture is comfortable and absorbs easily into skin, Effective to keep skin looking clear, Affordable, May help fade dark spots, redness and freckles

CONS: Hard to get hold of outside of Japan

WHO WILL LIKE THIS: Anyone who likes using Vitamin C based serums, Anyone who wants an affordable Vitamin C based serum

PRICE: RM59.90 | S$16.90 | THB480 | ¥1800 for 20ml

WHERE TO BUY: Guardian pharmacy Singapore, Watson's pharmacy Thailand and Malaysia, Most drugstores in Japan, Various websites online

The ingredient list for the Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence (as shared by reader Zeezee in the comments) is as follows:

Ingredients: propanediol, glycerin, butylene glycol, alcohol, propylene glycol, water, ascorbic acid, alpinia katsumadai seed extract, peg-60 hydrogenated castor oil, tocopheryl acetate, fragrance, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, 0-cymen-5-OL, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate

I will also advise not to be put off by the small 20ml size. From experience, I've found that a 20ml size bottle for a Vitamin C based serum is actually quite a good size, because oxidizes easily. With a smaller sized bottle, you reduce the risk of your product becoming useless after a while. In the case of this one, because you use only a few drops each time, a tube will last you a while. And it will be good to the last drop!

I repeat. Genius packaging! 😀

Have you tried this Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence?

So yes, I wanted to keep all this information to myself. But hey, good things should be shared, right? 🙂

How Do You Get Vitamin C On Keto

How Do You Get Vitamin C On Keto

Long gone are the days of "dieting" that simply meant cutting portions in half. Nope, today we all live in the age of nutrition revelations, biohacking, & lifestyle optimization. From Noom's psychology-based nutrition plans to the re-branding of Weight Watchers to avoid the word "weight" at all, going on a diet has become...complex. Although many can benefit long-term from adopting a diet that really works for them, there are always certain limitations we should be aware of, especially when food variety is restricted. Nutrient deficiencies aren't uncommon and beyond this, some diets aren't meant to be followed forever. They are merely short-term measures to achieve a specific number on a scale. Talking to a health care professional before you dive into any diet is always advised. It's not a one-size fits all phenomenon.

In recent years, the popularity of high fat & protein-based diets such as the Keto diet and the Carnivore diet are based on people finding positive results, many of them celebrities or public figures. However, when talking about any restrictive diet limiting and/or excluding a certain category of nutrients, a possibility of deficiency is a matter that must be addressed. Luckily, with proper supplementation, nutritional balance can be reestablished and maintained. If you're following a keto or carnivore diet, here's why you should consider an all-natural Liposomal Vitamin C supplement to ensure you maintain your health.

The Mighty Vitamin C & Its Benefits

Vitamin C is a widely recognized, powerful antioxidant, and as such, it doesn't require much introduction. However, there are certain aspects of this water-soluble vitamin , also known as ascorbic acid, that aren't necessarily considered common knowledge. One of them is the fact that vitamin C does not belong to the category of nutrients we're able to produce in our own bodies. In fact, we're one of the only mammals that can't . This means that we need to get 100% of the Vitamin C our bodies need from our diets. According to a study conducted by Y. Li and colleagues, most animals are able to synthesize a significant amount of the vitamin on their own, while humans are deprived of this capability due to a series of mutations of the key gene in the vitamin C biosynthesis.

All'Natural Liposomal Vitamin C

What's also important to note is that vitamin C is a crucial element of numerous important functions of the body , which means that its absence cannot be overlooked. How do we go about resolving this issue? Given that the amount obtained from common dietary sources doesn't suffice , that's where highly bioavailable Vitamin C supplementation comes into play. According to an overview of vitamin C , the stability of the vitamin in vegetables and fruits is compromised by numerous factors - including metallic ions, heat, pH, and oxygen - which may lead to oxidation of vitamin C.

One of the primary roles of vitamin C concerns collagen synthesis , as without it the natural production of collagen in the body would not be possible, and we would be lacking this main structural protein. Besides being the essential fuel in collagen biosynthesis , vitamin C is also required for the production of L-carnitine and certain neurotransmitters, and it is also an important factor in protein metabolism.

Furthermore, vitamin C is known for its protective role in the body as a physiological antioxidant which has been found to aid in the regeneration of other antioxidants, including vitamin E. It has also been shown to aid in the protection of indispensable molecules in the body, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and nucleic acids. What's more, given its role as a potent antioxidant, vitamin C also appears to combat the free radicals produced by normal metabolic respiration. Vitamin C also seems to reduce potentially harmful free radicals by producing relatively stable ascorbate free radicals.

According to a study on the effects of vitamin C supplementation on blood pressure , supplementing with all-natural Vitamin C has been associated with a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure . While on the topic of cardiovascular health, it is important to mention that there are indications connecting vitamin C supplementation with lowered levels of blood cholesterol and triglycerides.

Vitamin C for Blood Pressure

Moreover, vitamin C has been associated with the proliferation of white blood cells, crucial in the body's defense against infections, therefore greatly benefiting the immune system . In combination with zinc and arginine, vitamin C supplementation also appears to promote wound healing and shorten healing time. In addition, low levels of vitamin C have been linked to signs of cognitive impairment affecting memory and thinking.

Finally, vitamin C has been recognized as a valuable factor in skin health , especially given its role in collagen synthesis. According to an overview of vitamin C in skin health by the Linus Pauling Institute, ascorbic acid is an important component of skin structure, present in both the dermis and the epidermis. Therefore, this vitamin demonstrates great potential when it comes to photoprotection, skin dryness, protection against environmental pollutants, as well as wrinkling and other signs of aging.

Diets & Mindset

As anyone who's been on a diet can attest to, it can be easy to get all caught up in numbers on the scale or the "end-goal," partially or completely disregarding the possible consequences of a certain regimen. The truth is that every single diet, no matter how efficient, may lead to a deficiency, given that it limits or excludes a certain group of nutrients. Therefore, we'll review some of the popular diets, mainly focusing on keto and carnivore, and we'll discuss how we can avoid depriving our body of vital nutrients.

Ketogenic Diet & Potential Nutritional Gaps

Keto Diet

The massively popular Ketogenic diet, simply referred to as Keto, is a low-carb regimen that limits carbohydrate intake to 25-50 grams a day . As far as other macronutrients are concerned, the recommended scheme goes as follows : 55-60% fat, 35% protein, which leaves only 5-10% for the intake of carbs throughout the day. The main objective of this regimen is reaching nutritional ketosis , which is a state a deprivation of carbohydrates results in. A study on the ketogenic diet conducted by W. Masood and colleagues finds that during ketosis, ketone bodies replace glucose as a predominant energy source, limiting the insulin secretion and the stimulus for fat and glucose storage.

When it comes to efficiency, the statistics speak for themselves. According to an overview conducted by the Colorado State University, the keto diet has been proven to yield impressive weight-loss results , especially in type 2 diabetes patients and those diagnosed with the metabolic syndrome. Beyond weight-loss, the review suggests that these patients have experienced reduced cardiovascular disease symptoms, as well as improved insulin and glucose metabolisms.

Given the carbohydrate content of fresh fruits and vegetables , it is understood that keto dieters often choose to limit their intake of these foods . For instance, a single banana contains 27g CHO, and a single baked sweet potato 37g CHO - either of which surpasses the accepted keto limit of 25g CHO/day. Typically, keto followers get 65-75% energy from fats alone, 15-25% energy from protein, and only 5-10% energy from carbs. Research conducted by M. K. Taylor et al. suggests that this kind of macronutrient profile promotes the conversion of fatty acids to ketone bodies serving as energy substrates.

However, a study conducted by F. T. McSwiney and colleagues suggests that endurance athletes following a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet during a 12-week period experienced a significant drop in vitamin C levels . Furthermore, a study reviewing low-carb diets states that even though larger weight loss has been noted in low-carb diets as compared to low-fat diets, there is a risk of low intake of fiber, water-soluble antioxidants, and vitamins .

Limited Fruit and Vegetable Intake on Keto

What's more, a systematic review by C. Churuangsuk and colleagues states that restricting CHO-rich foods may seriously compromise the levels of minerals, B-vitamins, as well as antioxidants such as vitamin C . Furthermore, limiting them for a longer period of time could result in decreased content of iron, magnesium, thiamine, and folic acid. In addition, an evaluation of the Atkins diet (a similarly carb-restricted diet) emphasizes a serious risk of inadequacy for nutrients, including vitamin C.

Apart from the scientific evidence to support the Keto diet, you'll also hear a lot of hype from successful entrepreneurs, celebrities, and even athletes about their Keto lifestyles. From Lebron James to the Kardashians, and business leaders claiming their focus & productivity is improved because of it, Keto looks like it's here to stay for a while. The trouble is simply, can you stay on it for an extended period of time and stay healthy.

Carnivore Diet & Deficiencies

When it comes to a carnivore diet, there couldn't be a more suitable name as this regimen is based solely on meat and products derived from animals , disregarding other food groups altogether. More specifically, the carnivore diet menu includes meat, fish, eggs, and select dairy products, while excluding vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, grains, and nuts. To put it simply, you eat a lot of meat!

Carnivore Diet

Supporters of this diet include controversial professor Jordan Peterson, and comedian & podcaster Joe Rogan, who followed the carnivore diet for 30-days during World Carnivore Month in January. It's important to note that many people who try this diet find it very difficult to sustain long-term and if you're looking to have a lesser impact on the planet, this is about as far away from plant-based eating as you can get.

As far as dairy products are concerned, the diet proposes a limited intake of foods low in lactose. Unlike keto, this diet allows no consumption of carbs of any kind, which makes it heavily restrictive and very difficult to maintain long-term. Needless to say, due to the lack of numerous nutritious foods on the table of a carnivore, this kind of nutritional plan could easily lead to numerous deficiencies .

According to P. Dockrill at ScienceAlert.com , what some may consider a long-forgotten deficiency condition is a reality of many people - and the excessively restrictive diets aren't helping. Scurvy , often developed as a direct consequence of low levels of essential vitamin C , is just one of the health complications associated with strict regimes such as a carnivore diet. Think twice before adopting the pirate lifestyle.

Vitamin C Deficiency: Development & Manifestation

The Importance of Getting Enough Vitamin C

Okay, now that we can conclude that restrictive diets such as keto and carnivore put you at serious risk of developing vitamin C deficiency, it is clear that obtaining this vitamin from non-GMO Vitamin C supplementation should be a priority. But, what exactly do we mean by vitamin C deficiency, and why is it important - aside from obtaining all the discussed benefits - to avoid lacking it?

While the recommended daily dose of vitamin C for adults stands at 90 mg , the statistics show that intake hardly surpasses 48.8 mg. The consequences of failing to meet the daily requirement over a certain period of time appear to be both short-term and long-term - almost chronic. Namely, the health conditions associated with the suboptimal concentrations of vitamin C include scurvy, coronary heart disease, as well as stroke, a study on the nutritional deficiencies of ketogenic diet states.

Furthermore, the aforementioned study links vitamin C deficiency to numerous bone health-compromising conditions , including osteoporosis and hip issues due to lower bone mineral density. Also, neglecting vitamin C intake has been shown to increase the risk of hip fracture over the course of a lifetime.

Vitamin C in Bone Health

According to a study conducted by Y. Li and colleagues, in order to preserve the stability of vitamin C, and its role as an antioxidant, high levels of the vitamin must be obtained from highly bioavailable sources. If not, the instability of vitamin C promoted by its poor intestinal absorption and consistent excretion from the body could jeopardize the physiological availability of the vitamin.

The Aftermath of Vitamin C Deficiency: Scurvy

Scurvy is, without a doubt, a condition caused by vitamin C deficiency, a study conducted by S. A. Ahmad et al. states. According to this study, vitamin C acts as a reducing agent, lowering the levels of metal ions in enzymes and combatting free radicals. What's more, vitamin C is necessary for the conversion of the dietary form of iron into an easily absorbable ferrous form, which is the main reason behind anemia in scurvy. A vitamin C overview describes scurvy as a condition characterized by fragile capillaries and weakness of connective tissues, accompanied by fatigue or lassitude.

Furthermore, the study on florid scurvy goes on to explain how a lack of vitamin C compromises the vital process of collagen synthesis, thus potentially leading to loss of teeth, anomalies in the dentin, as well as hemorrhaging gums . In addition, insufficient levels of vitamin C have been associated with the development of osteoporosis manifested through radiological changes such as brittle bones and loosened periosteum, commonly detected in scurvy patients.

Supplementing with Liposomal Vitamin C to Avoid Scurvy

In addition to the mentioned symptoms, other manifestations of scurvy-related vitamin C deficiency include poor wound healing, easy bruising, hair loss, joint ache and swelling, and subcutaneous bleeding. All of the mentioned symptoms have been related to collagen impairment in connective tissue, blood vessels, and bones. Even though scurvy is rarely diagnosed in children, there have been instances of this condition among both children and the elderly following a strict diet regimen.

Learning as much as possible about the nutrition your body needs is one of the best approaches you can take for long-term health when it comes to any diet. However, in the process of implementing a certain diet into your lifestyle, remember to take a hard look at the pros and cons - and supplement accordingly. When considering more restrictive diets like Keto or Carnivore, supplementing with vitamin C is essential. The power of this essential nutrient can't be emphasized enough. Why Are Rose Hips Added To Vitamin C

Why Are Rose Hips Added To Vitamin C

Rosehip vitamin C benefits that separate this supplement from regular vitamin C are extra elements the supplements contain due to rosehips. For millennia, humans used this herb in medicine and anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin C is a proven fact. Combined, they create a superior product that can help boost your immunity.

Rosehip Vitamin C Benefits Overview:

  • Stronger immunity.
Studies prove that vitamin C can help strengthen immunity. Rosehips boost this effect because they contain a variety of other important elements, like vitamins E and K. If you study the list of all antioxidants and then rosehips, you'll see they contain most of them too.
  • Arthritis prevention and management.
Consider the best fruits for joint pain and you'll notice that the majority of them contain vitamin C. It's because of the anti-inflammatory effect of this element. This vitamin also helps promote the health of connective tissues and the production of collagen. This helps keep your joints healthy. If arthritis has struck already, rosehip vitamin C benefits will alleviate the pain a little.
  • Healthy and glowing skin.
Combining rosehips nutrients and vitamin C creates and extremely potent antioxidant cocktail. The effect of vitamin C on collagen helps keep your skin smooth. Anti-inflammatory properties of antioxidants reduce redness and help fight acne caused by bacteria.

Why Rosehip Vitamin C Benefits Are Different?

The most important reason to why a rosehip vitamin C supplement is different is that it's more than pure vitamin. In their natural form, rosehips are used in traditional medicine to:

  • Settle indigestion and stomach spasms
  • Boost kidney health and detox kidneys
  • Help treat gallbladder ailments
  • Fight increased fluid retention
  • Lower high blood pressure
  • Cure fever

The effectiveness of this seemingly plain fruit comes from an extremely high level of antioxidants. Rosehips contain a variety of flavonoids, carotenoids, essential fatty acids, and vitamins. In fact, they make one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C.

However, one cannot consume rosehips as they are. Despite being edible, these seedpods are extremely irritating for the stomach. The seeds inside of them are surrounded with tiny but extremely sharp hairs. You must remove those before eating so as not to damage your stomach and intestines.

Unfortunately, processing rosehips destroys almost all vitamin C that they naturally contain. Flavonoids and some other beneficial elements 'survive', but the value of the fruit is reduced.

Rosehip vitamin C benefits you because this supplement offers the elements remaining in rosehips. But also, it contains a large amount of vitamin C. The resulting effect is similar to that of eating natural rosehips.

How Much Vitamin C to Take Daily?

Usually, humans need less than 100mg of vitamin C to support them daily. However, due to the unstable nature of this element, it's recommended that one takes between 500 and 1000mg. Larger doses are best for the cold and flu seasons as an extra-intake kicks your immunity into overdrive.

Vitamin C

This isn't harmful to your health, but you shouldn't do such an intense immune system boost often. Therefore, limit intense vitamin C supplementation to 1-2 times a year. If you start before the cold season strikes, your body's defenses can get good enough to carry you through it. At the very least, you can be sure that your cold will be less intense and faster to cure.

You can enjoy rosehip vitamin C benefits at their fullest by taking a specialized supplement, like C-1000 With Rose Hips from Nature's Potent. Aside from 1000mg of vitamin C and actual rosehip fruits, this supplement contains citrus bioflavonoid complex and acerola powder.

Bear in mind that you shouldn't exceed the recommended dose of 1-2 capsules daily. Be sure to consult your health care provider about adding any supplements to your diet.

Get Your Glow On With These 5 Skin-Protecting Vitamin C Creams

Bustle/Amazon

Vitamin C: Not just for treating scurvy anymore. "Vitamin C is essential for good skin health," NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Howe tells Bustle. "It's the most abundant and important antioxidant in our skin." As an antioxidant, vitamin C protects your skin from environmental aggressors like the sun, pollution, and smoke; and, according to Dr. Howe, an overabundance of those free radicals can result in collagen depletion, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. It follows, then, that infusing your skin with vitamin C can result in a glowier, clearer complexion, so you'll want to get your topical vitamin C wherever you can. The best vitamin C creams are a good place to start.

Vitamin C is especially valuable for providing a deeper layer of sun protection that SPF can't quite reach. "Even the most diligent sunscreen applier will still have some UV rays penetrate the skin — sunscreens are screens, after all; they block the transmission of only a given percentage of incident UV radiation," Dr. Howe says. "Some of it still gets through. And that's where antioxidants like vitamin C come in. Antioxidants snuff out the damage that UV rays cause by quenching free radicals present in the skin." That said, this is not a reason to skimp on the face sunscreen you're already wearing every day (right?).

Dr. Howe recommends applying vitamin C products in the morning; that way, you're providing your skin with a fresh supply of the antioxidant's protective powers. And because they're typically used during the day, lots of vitamin C creams include other ingredients that brighten, smooth, hydrate, and otherwise benefit your skin.

Ahead, you'll find five of the best vitamin C creams for all manner of budgets and skin types. Put them on in the morning for luminous skin all day long, then drink a glass of orange juice so your teeth don't fall out.

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

1

The Overall Best Vitamin C Cream

There's no way to sugarcoat it: At $65, this Image Skincare Vital C Hydrating Intense Moisturizer is expensive. But if it's any consolation, this is my favorite daytime moisturizer of all time. Some of the main ingredients in here are water, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter, which all work together to pull and seal moisture into your skin. It leaves my combination skin feeling soft, bouncy, and not at all greasy. I also like its bright citrusy scent, courtesy of antioxidant-rich orange peel extract. If you like this moisturizer, check out the rest of Image's vitamin c-centric Vital C line. I'm partial to their Vital C Hydrating Enzyme Masque, which I use weekly for some gentle resurfacing.

2

The Best (Affordable) Vitamin C Cream With SPF

As Dr. Howe mentioned, vitamin C creams are best used during the day so the antioxidants can help stave off environmental aggressors you may encounter out in the world — and, in the skin-care lexicon, "daytime" means "you also need to be wearing SPF." This Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Moisturizer With Sunscreen has that, and so many other things, covered. The ingredients are basically a greatest-hits list of everything you need for luminous, even, and sun-protected skin. Retinol SA, a gentle form of retinol infused with hyaluronic acid, gives your skin the smoothing and resurfacing effects retinol is beloved for, without the dryness and irritation it's demonized for. Then there's straight-up hyaluronic acid for hydrating and plumping, vitamin C for brightening and protecting, and broad spectrum SPF 30 for staving off UVA/UVB rays. Even better: This one-size-fits-all AM moisturizer costs just about $18 on Amazon.

3

The Best Eye Cream With Vitamin C

Boosting collagen production, reducing hyperpigmentation, generally enlivening tired, sallow skin: These are a few of my favorite things about vitamin C creams, and they are, almost always, the things your under-eyes could use more of. Along with that hero ingredient, this moisturizing (but non-greasy) Redermic C Pure Vitamin C Eye Cream from La Roche-Posay contains lots of botanical oils and a healthy dose of hyaluronic acid, the other, unofficial hero ingredient on this list. Neurosensine, a naturally occurring dipeptide, and the brand's signature thermal water are also included in the formula to reduce redness and provide a much-needed cooling effect. Use this one during the day, and La Roche-Posay's Redermic R Retinol Eye Cream at night if you take your depuffing regimen seriously.

4

A Great Mid-Range Vitamin C Gel-Cream

The Body Shop's Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser has a refreshing, cooling gel texture, which makes this an especially good choice if you have oily skin and find traditional creams too heavy or greasy. Along with vitamin C derived from Amazonian camu camu berries, this one contains soothing aloe vera and conditioning vitamin E and sesame seed oil. It's a zingy little pick-me-up for your skin in the morning, and it'll provide a soft, dewy canvas for your makeup. Just let the gel sink in and dry for a few minutes before you do that.

5

Another Luxurious Vitamin C Cream To Consider

The C.E.O. Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream from Sunday Riley sets itself apart from others like it for its extra-special ingredients, which are both botanically and scientifically derived. Lime pearl extract, a natural source of AHAs, gently sloughs away the layer of dead cells on top of your skin so the cream's 5% vitamin C can absorb more thoroughly. Meanwhile, turmeric and exopolysaccharides provide more targeted protection from environmental pollution. (The latter is particularly effective for staving off the pollution particles found in smog.) Otherwise, the texture, slip, and orangey scent are similar to the Image moisturizer, so go for this one if you're very exposed to pollution (hi, fellow New Yorkers!), or if you're in the cult of Sunday Riley.
